One of the most dramatic conclusions to a season in Everton history, with the First Division title already in the bag this game was all about Dixie Dean and his quest for an unprecedented haul of 60 league goals. A week earlier he had scored four against Burnley to draw him within two goals of George Camsell’s record of 57. Now he needed a hat-trick to complete his task. Arsenal set out to spoil the party and took an early lead, but Dean soon set about doing what he did best. He bundled a Critchley corner home to equalise, and three minutes later scored a penalty. Everton played at a frantic pace, but as the game neared its conclusion time seemed to be running out. Then, with seven minutes remaining, Alec Troup hit an out-swinging corner, Dean rose above the Arsenal defence and the record was his.
